This Place Video

Members watched the video that will be shown at the event. It has been recommended that the video be split into two segments to match the Town Hall program format. It was additionally recommended for the audience to possibly work in small groups to brainstorm what they can do to promote advocacy.

Panel Organization

After brainstorming ideas regarding advocacy efforts following the event, it was determined that the panel will be presented in three tiers:

Awareness Panel to include:
  • Sheriff Bradshaw - Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office
  • Carol Owsiany - Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco
  • Dr. Malecki or Dr. Crantz Public Health perspective

Assistance/ Problem Solving Panel to include:
  • Tom Henderson - Former NFL affiliate now working for Hanley Center
  • FACE IT - parent representative
  • Access to Recovery (ATR) representative

    Advocacy Panel to include:
  • Project Graduation - parent representative
  • Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) - Teacher/Advisor representative
  • Palm Beach County Substance Abuse Coalition representative

It is hoped that Lois Frankel will be the moderator for the event. Back up moderators include Kristen Hoke from WPBF Channel 25 or Dr. Alison Adler-Chief Safety and Learning Environment, Department of Safe Schools.

  • Town Hall Meeting Location

    High Schools on hold include:
Boynton Beach HS (there is a charge for this facility), Forest Hill HS, and Palm Beach Central HS

The Education Network (TEN) was contacted and has agreed to provide a remote broadcast and to tape the meeting in an effort to show it throughout the month. This would greatly increase our exposure to the community. TEN will be contacted regarding the change in time for the event.
The Harriet Himmel Theatre at City Place is not available as a location site as it is booked for March 28th.

    Hanley Center:
The Hanley Center was offered as a site location. The Hanley Center would provide a lunch (with costs underwritten by Hanley), marketing efforts to reach current substance abuse listees, and the event would be open to the public. Considering all factors in place, members unanimously voted to host the Town Hall event at the Hanley Center.

Title of event: Florida’s Kids and Alcohol: A Town Hall Meeting
    Time of event: 12:00-1:30 p.m.
This event will be open to the Hanley Center staff and the Prevention Center staff as well as the general public.

    Marketing Update

Preferred Printing will provide "stop signs" at the event for parents to get involved in prevention efforts and to target establishments selling alcohol.
A marketing flier will be developed and distributed to faith based organizations, the Riviera Beach Community Council, Chief of Police, Community Liaison Police, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, League of Cities, district Parent Teacher Student Organizations (PTSO), mental health community agencies and the general media.

TA press release will be forwarded to the Department of Public Affairs of the School district for posting on the website.
Hanley Center will assist with much of the marketing needs.

    Public Service Announcements (PSA's)

The group viewed several PSA’s and discussed each one. It was determined that a PSA would run after completion of the awareness panel part of the event.

    Getting Involved

A "getting involved" document suggesting ways attendees can get involved in prevention efforts was distributed and reviewed by the group. Suggestions were made and additions were added under each section of the document. This tip sheet on getting involved will be reviewed and finalized at the next meeting.
The next Town Hall Planning Meeting will take place on Monday, March 13th 2006 at 2:30pm in the Prevention Center. All attending should bring with them prepared questions related to the three panel tiers:
  • awareness
  • assistance &
  • advocacy
This will help the panelists in preparing for their answers for the event.
